If you earn money online, you likely have plenty of accounts and sensitive information that needs to be protected. Without proper security measures in place, your personal and financial information are at risk of being hacked or stolen. You’ll not only protect your information and finances by taking these easy steps, but you’ll also save time and enjoy peace of mind knowing your online income is safe and organized. In this article, we’ll go over 10 easy tips for securing your online income, keeping your information safe,

1. Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN)

A VPN encrypts your internet connection and masks your IP address, making it more difficult for hackers to access your network. There are many VPN providers, such as ExpressVPN and NordVPN. I use NordVPN to secure my online income.

2. Enable two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of identification, such as a code sent to your phone, in addition to your password. This makes it much harder for hackers to gain access to your accounts. I use it whenever possible to keep my accounts and information extra secure.

3. Use strong and unique passwords

One of the easiest ways for hackers to gain access to your accounts is by guessing or cracking your password. To avoid this, use strong, complex passwords that are unique to each account. I use passwords containing 30–40 letters, numbers, and symbols and use 1Password to generate and store them for each site. Besides that, 1Password can you help to stay organized.

A small example of 1Password

(1Password is a personal password manager that can generate and store strong and unique passwords for each of your online accounts. It can also securely store personal information like credit card numbers, passport details, and security questions. It makes it easy to automatically fill in login details and includes a built-in password generator and analyzer.)

4. Keep software up to date

Hackers often exploit vulnerabilities in outdated software to gain access to your network. To avoid this, keep your software up to date, including your operating system, browser, and any apps or programs you use for your business.

5. Be wary of public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi networks are often unsecured and easy for hackers to access. To avoid this, use a VPN when connecting to public Wi-Fi, or avoid using public Wi-Fi altogether if possible.

6. Use a secure payment gateway

When accepting payments from customers, make sure to use a secure payment gateway that encrypts sensitive information and is PCI compliant. PCI, or Payment Card Industry, is a set of standards that businesses must follow to ensure the safe handling of credit card information.

7. Backup important data

If your business relies on important data, be sure to back it up regularly. This way, if your network is hacked or your data is lost, you can quickly restore it.

8. Monitor network traffic

Keep an eye on network traffic to detect any unusual activity. I use Little Snitch for this purpose. For Windows users, an alternative is GlassWire, but I have yet to experience it.

Example of Little Snitch

(Little Snitch is a firewall software that monitors and controls network traffic on your computer (macOS). It allows you to set rules to block or allow connections and provides notifications for outgoing connections.)

9. Train yourself on online safety

You are a vital part of your online income, and you need to be aware of online safety measures to protect your income. Provide yourself with training and resources to stay safe online.

10. Comply with data protection regulations

Be sure to comply with any data protection regulations that apply to your online income, such as GDPR. This will help protect your personal information and avoid hefty fines.

By following these easy tips, you can help ensure that your online income stays safe and secure. Remember to keep your software up to date. Also, make sure you update your passwords regularly, use a VPN and two-factor authentication, and be aware of public Wi-Fi risks. These steps will help you protect your personal and financial information from cyber threats, so you can enjoy your “journey” without worrying. :)
